A wiring harness consists of hundreds of wires for virtually everything which is electrical in a car. The sight of complicated, confusing, confounding collection of copper, connections and colored wires can make one faint. Patience and a clear head are required to install a wiring harness.
The used wiring harness can be installed to work with the basic tools found in a nicely equipped toolbox along with a few specialty tools. A good copy of the schematics of the car helps to deal with the components and connections.
Always remember to never connect the battery until the very end. For safety purposes, connect the battery only after you have double-and-triple checked the wires, the connections and the proper operation.
Separate each harness from the pile after laying out all the wires. Then, sort the individual wires into groups based on size and location. Don’t be disturbed by the mass of wires. They start making sense once they are separated and planned for. The pile eventually recedes to nothing.
The headlight wires and the connections for the turn signals comprise the headlight harness. The right side of this harness, in most cases, splits off. It then travels above the spare tire and under the fuel tank cross member. Toward the dash on the harness is the master cylinder harness. These are the wires for the dome light.
In the headlight switch, most of the wires can be attached while the switch is out of the car. However, for a full set up, one needs to install the switch. In case there is no hole for the headlight switch on a general dashboard, one can be cut.
Just in case you happen to be replacing the spade connectors, you need to clip off the wires on the connector, except for those wires that attach into the relay switches. Quad connectors are used to control the turn signals. They should be so attached so that power and function can function simultaneously. This is necessary so that the front and rear lights will flash at the same time.
The wires go into the wiper switch in the same manner as the headlights switch. Single and triple connectors attach the rear tail light harness to the main harness. The wires for the brake lights, turn signals and reverse light are to be installed in the rear fender.
If the wire components and connections have been done correctly, install the battery, and turn the key. If the lights go on and the wipers start to swing, the used wiring harness has been connected successfully.
