Refer to Fig. ,for LED identification numbers. Weaker illumination of an LED indicates a contact resistance in respective circuit.

  • Inspect for continuity between ABS control unit connector terminal 34 and ground at battery ground cable (LED 1), Fig. .
  • Inspect for continuity between ABS control unit connector terminal 10 and ground at battery ground cable (LED 3).
  • If continuity does not exist, repair shorted or open circuit.

Power Brake Units -> Power Brake Unit Service -> A4 & S4 -> A6, Cabriolet & S6 -> A8 -> Hydraulic Booster/Servo -> Vacuum Booster

Hydraulic Booster/Servo

  • Remove master cylinder as outlined under "Hydraulic Brake System."
  • Disconnect hydraulic lines from booster/servo.
  • Remove brake booster/servo attaching bolts.
  • Disconnect booster pushrod from brake pedal.
  • Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
    • Adjust pushrod length to 9.04-9.08 inches from face of booster/servo unit to center of clevis hole.
    • Torque booster mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs.

Vacuum Booster

A4 & S4
  • Remove master cylinder as outlined under "Hydraulic Brake System" section.
  • Disconnect hydraulic lines from brake servo unit.

  • Raise and support vehicle, then remove front tires.
  • If brake pads are to be used again, mark installed positions for installation reference.
  • Remove caliper guide pin caps.
  • Pry brake pad retaining spring out from brake caliper housing using a suitable screwdriver.
  • Remove caliper guide pins.
  • Remove caliper housing, then position aside using suitable wire or rope.
  • Remove brake pads.
  • Clean brake caliper housing using a suitable methylated spirit. Pay close attention to pad bonding surfaces. They must be free of all grease and adhesive residues.
