Always remove some brake fluid from master cylinder reservoir prior to installing new pads. When caliper piston is pushed back, fluid is forced out of caliper and into reservoir. After pads are installed and seated, refill reservoir to MAX mark.

Failure to follow described procedures may lead to a reduction in parking brake efficiency.
- On Fox models, remove heat deflector plate, then disconnect parking brake cable from compensator bar.
- On all models, remove one wheel bolt, then push self adjusting wedge upwards with a suitable screwdriver through wheel bolt hole to back off brake shoes, Fig. .
- Reinstall wheel bolt and tighten to specifications, then remove grease cap with puller tool No. VW 637/2, or equivalent.

The ABS control unit has a permanent fault memory. If problems occur at electrically monitored sensors or components they are stored in memory.
Faults are stored with varying priorities, solenoid faults have the highest priority and are displayed first. Faults which occur occasionally, or sporadic faults have the lowest priority and are displayed last.
