  • Discharge refrigerant and remove clutch plate and hub outlined previously.
  • Using tool No. J-5403-A or equivalent, remove shaft seal seat retainer ring.
  • Remove shaft seal seat and seal with tool No. J-23128-A or equivalent, then the O-ring with tool No. J-9553-01 or equivalent.

INSTALLATION

Ensure compressor neck and shaft area are free from lint, dirt, or other foreign material before installing new seal parts.

  • Attach inner cable and sheath to instrument panel control.
  • Move temperature cable to "Cold" then attach loop on inner cable to temperature door on heater case.
  • Attach cable sheath to heater case, then move temperature lever to full "Heat." This will require force to slide inner cable clip to its proper position.
  • Move temperature adjusting lever quickly from "Cold" to "Hot." Door should be heard seating at stops.

Heater Functional Test

Before starting the functional test, the vehicle should be idling with coolant hot and thermostat open. Coolant temperature should be approximately 194°F.

  • Cycle the temperature lever to the extreme ends of travel in control assembly to ensure cable is properly adjusted.
