The A6 and A4 series of vehicle use a single electric two-speed cooling fan. The cooling fan speeds are controlled by a water temperature sensor and a refrigerant high pressure sensor. These sensors control relays which route electric current through resistors or directly to the fan motor to control speed.

This procedure has been modified by a Technical Service Bulletin.
In order to be properly coded, models with a Nippondenso A/C compressor, require a control head with a code of "K" or higher.
The control head micro processor requires that a code be stored into memory to allow the automatic A/C control system to properly interface with the powertrain control system.

- Connect VAG 1551, or equivalent scan tool to the diagnostic connector.
- Operate scan tool until display shows "Select Function XX."
- Press scan buttons 0 and 7 to select "Code Control Module" function, then press "Q" button to confirm input.
