Whenever the ECM is replaced, the new ECM will need to be " Coded." Use the following procedure to "Code" the ECM.
- Connect VAG 1551, or equivalent scan tool to the diagnostic connector.
- Operate scan tool until display shows "Select Function XX."
- Press scan buttons 0 and 7 to select "Code Control Module" function, then press "Q" button to confirm input.
- "Code Control Module" and " Enter Code Number" should appear on the display.
- Enter correct code number as follows:
- Code 0003: Vehicles with manual transmission.

Do not smoke or allow an open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel system related components. The highly flammable vapor mixtures may ignite, resulting in serious personal injury.
Obtain the vehicle owner's radio theft protection code, then disconnect the battery ground cable. Briefly open fuel filler cap to relieve system pressure, then close it again.
After the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal driveability symptoms may occur. The vehicle may need to be driven while it relearns its adaptive strategy.

- Remove cap from wheel using a suitable removal tool then loosen lug nuts.
- Remove axle bolt and washer Fig. . Remove and install axle bolt only with tires on ground. Do not move vehicle without driveshaft or outer constant velocity joint installed.
- Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel.
- Pull speed sensor out of axle housing slightly.
- Loosen but do not remove lower control arm bolts at subframe.
- Remove lower strut bolt from lower control arm.
- Remove bolts from driveshaft flange at transaxle.
- Remove lower mounting bolt for strut.
