Vehicle: 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 4.2 V8 GAS
- To allow free rotation of driveshaft, move selector lever into "N" position.
- Remove engine and transmission.
- Remove high pressure from fuel system. Before opening high pressure area - e.g. removing high pressure pumps, fuel rail, fuel injectors, fuel lines or fuel pressure sensor, fuel pressure in high pressure area must be reduced to a residual pressure of approximately 6 bar.
- Disconnect fuel supply line.
- Disconnect battery ground cable.
- Recover refrigerant, using a suitable A/C servicing station.
- Pull engine compartment cover seal off bulkhead.

- Disconnect battery ground cable.
- Remove protective cap and disconnect electrical connections at alternator.
- Clamp off alternator coolant hoses using suitable hose clamps.
- Remove bolt and coolant pipes from alternator. Coolant hoses may remain connected to coolant pipes.
- If belts are to be reused mark direction of rotation, before removing drive belts. Belt damage will result if not reinstalled in proper direction.

- Disconnect battery ground cable from main and auxiliary batteries.
- Remove engine and transmission.
- Remove left and right windshield wiper arms.
- Pull engine compartment cover seal off bulkhead.
- Remove covers in engine compartment for plenum chamber, if required.
- Disconnect smaller connector from Engine Control Modules (ECM) and remove Ground (GND) connection for wiring harness.
- Open fuse box cover on left in plenum chamber and disconnect connectors.

Only alternators by Hitachi are delivered as replacement parts. Delphi alternator is no longer produced. On alternators with hard rubber disc clutch, this should generally be replaced with torsion-elastic clutch.
- Disconnect battery ground cable.
- Drain coolant into a suitable container.
- Disconnect supply hose (white marking) and return hose (blue marking) from fuel filter.
