DRUM BRAKES, GENERAL MOTORS -> General Information -> SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
Vehicle: 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham 5.0 V8 GAS
When working on or around brake assemblies, care must be taken to prevent breathing asbestos dust, as many manufacturers incorporate asbestos fibers in the production of brake linings. During routine service operations the amount of asbestos dust from brake lining wear is at a low level due to a chemical breakdown during use, and a few precautions will minimize exposure.
- Do not sand or grind brake linings unless suitable local exhaust ventilation equipment is used to prevent excessive asbestos exposure.
- Wear a suitable respirator approved for asbestos dust use during all repai...

POWER BRAKE UNITS, GENERAL MOTORS -> GIRLOCK SINGLE DIAPHRAGM TYPE -> Assembly -> Brakes Grab -> Brakes Slow To Release Or Drag -> Brakes Slow To Respond -> DESCRIPTION -> Disassembly -> Excessive Pedal Effort -> OVERHAUL -> TROUBLESHOOTING
Vehicle: 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham 5.0 V8 GAS
DESCRIPTION
This booster is a single diaphragm, vacuum suspended unit with a lightweight cast alloy housing,Fig. . Vacuum is applied to the front and rear housings. When the brake pedal is released, negative pressure is equalized on both sides of the diaphragm and power piston assembly. Spring tension holds the piston at the rest position. When the brakes are applied, the atmospheric port in the power piston is opened. Negative pressure in the front chamber pulls the diaphragm and vacuum piston assembly, reaction disc and output rod forward. Pressure on the master c...

Vehicle: 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham 5.0 V8 GAS
These brakes have self-adjusting shoe mechanisms that assure correct lining-to-drum clearances at all times. The automatic adjusters operate only when the brakes are applied as the car is moving rearward.
Although the brakes are self-adjusting, an initial adjustment is necessary after the brake shoes have been relined or replaced, or when the length of the adjusting screw has been changed during some other service operation.
Frequent usage of an automatic transmission forward range to halt reverse vehicle motion may prevent the automatic adjusters from functioning, thereby induc...

Vehicle: 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham 5.7 V8 GAS
When a premature rear wheel slide is obtained on a brake application, it usually is an indication that the fluid pressure to the rear wheels is above the 50% reduction ratio for the rear line pressure and that malfunction has occurred within the proportioning valve.
To test the valve, install gauge set shown in Fig. in brake line between master cylinder and proportioning valve, and at outpu...
