Front
  • Remove cable for contact sensor from connector on floating caliper.
  • Remove top or bottom bolt (depending on vehicle model and location of brake hoses) and remove counter-hold sliding pin.
  • Swing cylinder housing away from rotor.
  • Remove pads from brake carrier. Replace brake pads when lining thickness is less than .08 inch or if oily or greasy.
  • Clean brake carrier contact surfaces.
  • Remove contact sensor from lining backplate on inside brake pad.
  • Check dust boots and dust cap, replace if necessary.

Brake System Bleed

On 400SE, 500SEL and 600SEL models, master cylinder brake switch over valve must be electrically activated to bleed additional pressure chamber.

  • With ignition in Off position, empty pressure reservoir at bleeder valve SP, then close valve, Fig. .
  • Connect suitable pressure bleeder.
  • Bleed brakes at each wheel, allow about 1 pint (.5 liter) of brake fluid to flow.
  • Start engine.
  • Open SP bleeder valve until brake fluid flows clear, with no bubbles.
  • Close bleeder valve, charging pump will run about 30 seconds.

Floating

  • Remove self-locking bolts.
  • Remove heat shield.
  • Force out piston with compressed air and using piston turning tongs. If piston is seized due to rust, replace complete cylinder housing.
  • Remove deposits on piston with soft brass wire brush or rough cloth only. If there is noticeable damage to chrome plating, replace piston.
  • Remove piston seal from groove in cylinder bore.
  • Check cylinder bore of floating caliper for wear. If bore is scored or rusty, replace complete floating caliper.

During all tests when ignition switch is on, LED must illuminate, indicating battery voltage is satisfactory. Vehicle must not be driven with (ABS) adapter connected. Refer to Fig. for connection of test equipment and Fig. for anti-lock system diagnosis.

Do not use ABS tester with fault memory on models equipped with ASR, ASD or 4MATIC.
