DESCRIPTION
The powertrain control module (PCM) controls both cooling fans by controlling three relays through two outputs. There are two modes of cooling fan operation, low speed and high speed. In the low speed mode the cooling fans are powered in series, cooling fan relay 1 is energized by the PCM and both cooling fans run at low speed. In the high speed mode the cooling fans are powered in parallel which allows the fans to run at high speed. Cooling fans operate only when the ignition is in run.

Shaft seal should not be replaced if only small amounts of oil are noted on adjacent surfaces. Shaft seal should only be replaced if a large amount of sprayed oil is observed, and then only after actual refrigerant leakage is found using an approved leak test procedure.

3.1L ENGINE
- Open vent plugs located on the thermostat housing and on throttle body return pipe above water pump.
- Turn both plugs two to three turns.
- Fill cooling system to the base of radiator neck, then closed both vent plugs. Do not over tighten plugs.
- Install radiator cap, then add sufficient coolant to recovery tank.
- Start engine and observe low coolant warning lamp.
- If lamp remains on, repeat bleed procedure.
