BRAKE SERVICE PROCEDURES FOR 1994 Lexus ES300 AUTOMOBILES

Disc Brakes -> Rear Disc Brakes & Parking Brakes -> Parking Brake Service -> Adjustment -> Assemble -> Disassemble

Disassemble
- Remove rear disc brake assembly and suspend securely. Do not let caliper hang by brake hose.
- Remove rotor disc, Fig. . If it cannot be removed easily, return shoe adjuster until wheel turns freely, then remove rotor.
- Remove shoe return springs.
- Remove front shoe as follows:
- Slide out front shoe, remove adjuster.
- Remove shoe strut with spring.
- Disconnect tension spring and remove shoe.
- Remove rear shoe as follows:
- Slide out rear shoe and remove tension spring.
- Disconnect parking brake cable from shoe lever.
- Remove shoe hold-down cups, springs and pins.

Removal
- On models with TRAC, connect a vinyl tube to bleeder plug of TRAC actuator, then loosen bleeder plug. Fluid is under high pressure and could spray out with great force so exercise caution.
- On all models, remove master cylinder as outlined under "Hydraulic Brake Systems."
- On models with TRAC, proceed as follows:

Hydraulic Brake Systems -> Brake System Bleed -> Brake Lines -> Master Cylinder -> Traction Control (TRAC) System

Master Cylinder
- Fill reservoir with fluid.
- Disconnect tubes from master cylinder. Then slowly depress brake pedal and hold.
- Block off outlet holes with fingers and release pedal. Repeat three or four times.
Brake Lines
Bleed wheel with longest brake line first, then work back to the master cylinder according to brake line length.
- Connect tube to brake cylinder.
- Depress pedal several times and hold, then loosen bleeder plug with pedal still held down.
- When fluid stops coming out, tighten bleeder plug and release pedal. Repeat several times.

- Remove wheel.
- Remove the bottom caliper bolt, Figs. through , and turn caliper up, Fig. .
- On models equipped with single and dual piston calipers, remove following parts:
- Two anti-squeal springs.
- Two brake pads.
- Four anti-squeal shims.
- Two pad wear indicators.
- Four pad support plates.
- On models equipped with four piston calipers, remove the following:
- Clip and two pins.
- Anti-rattle springs.
- Two pads.
- Clip and disc wear indicator from inner pad of right wheel.

GS300, LS400, SC300 & SC400
Removal
- On GS300 models with TRAC, connect vinyl tube to bleeder plug of TRAC actuator, then loosen bleeder plug with ignition in OFF position. Use extreme care as fluid is under high pressure. Tighten plug when fluid stops flowing out.
- On LS400 models with TRAC, remove TRAC assembly as described under "Traction Control (TRAC) Actuator."
- On SC300 and SC400 models with TRAC, drain high-pressure fluid.

Brake Pedal Height
- Measure brake pedal height, Fig. .
- If pedal height is not 5.81-6.2 inches on ES300, 5.3-5.7 inches on 1993 GS300, 5.35-5.75 inches on 1994-96 GS300, 5.92-6.31 inches on SC300 and SC400 or 5.62-6.02 inches on 1993-94 LS400, or 5.26-5.66 inches on 1995-96 LS400 models, adjust pedal height as follows:
- Remove the undercover and lower dash finish panel as outlined under "Instrument Panel, Replace" in " Dash Panel Service" .
- Disconnect stop lamp switch.
- Loosen stop light switch locknut, then back out switch.
- Loosen pushrod locknut.
