These brakes have self-adjusting shoe mechanisms that ensure correct lining-to-drum clearances at all times. The automatic adjusters operate only when the brakes are applied as the car is moving rearward.

Caliper Removal
- Remove approximately 2/3 of brake fluid from master cylinder.
- Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
- Position suitable pliers over inboard pad and housing as shown in Fig. , and squeeze pliers to compress caliper piston.
- If caliper assembly is being removed for service, remove inlet fitting attaching bolt, copper washer, and inlet fitting from caliper housing. Brake System Bleed
Before bleeding the rear brakes, the rear displacement cylinder pistons must be returned to their top most position. Using a TECH 1 scan tool or suitable equivalent, enter the manual control function and "APPLY" the rear motor. Ensure the enable relay is "ON." If a scan tool is not available, bleed the front brakes to ensure a firm brake pedal exists, then carefully drive vehicle over 4 mph to cause the ABS to initialize itself. This will return the rear displacement cylinder to the top position. The entire brake system should now be re-bled.
