- Disconnect and plug brake hoses, Fig. .
- Disconnect wear sensor connector.
- Remove connector, and if required, speed sensor.
- Remove mounting bolts and caliper from steering knuckle or wheel carrier.
- Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
- Install new self-locking bolts and tighten to specifications.
- Only transparent (temperature resistance) wear sensors may be installed on rear axle.
- Front wear sensors' contacts must correspond to plug connectors.

- Disconnect wear sensor connector.
- On 1995 models without cam on housing, remove lower mounting bolt, steady sliding pin and fold sliding caliper up. Do not move steering wheel while housing if folded out.
- On 1996-99 models with cam on housing, remove lower mounting bolt, steady sliding pin and remove floating caliper, securing with suitable hook.
- On all models, inspect boots for damage and replace as required.
- Remove brake pads.
- Remove some brake fluid from reservoir.
- Pull wear sensor out of lining back plate.
- Push piston back...

Four-wheel ABS uses a control unit, hydraulic actuator and wheel speed sensors to control brake fluid pressure and prevent wheel lock during severe braking conditions,
Basic ABS components are supplemented by an expanded hydraulic unit, a charging pump, a fourth wheel speed sensor and a more comprehensive electronic system for Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR) and Electronic Traction System (ETS).
Integrated with ABS and traction control systems, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) detects slides and applies brake pressure to individual wheels to help maintain control.

- On S320, S350, S420, S500, S600, SL320, SL500 and SL600 models, remove exhaust system heat shield.
- On C36, C220, C230, C280, E300, E320, E420 and E430 models, remove cover panel under rear squab.
- On S320, S350, S420, S500 and S600 models, proceed as follows:
- Disconnect exhaust system as required.
- Turn preloading automatic slack adjuster eccentric pin counterclockwise approximately 1/2 turn using suitable Allen wrench.
- At same time, push pin back longitudinal slot until spring-loaded locking eccentric locks into spring clip position with elevation.
