Front & Rear Split System
When the brake pedal is depressed, both the primary (front brake) and the secondary (rear brake) master cylinder pistons are moved simultaneously to exert hydraulic fluid pressure on their respective systems, Fig. .
If the rear (secondary) brake system fails, initial brake pedal movement will cause the unrestricted secondary piston to bottom in the master cylinder bore. Primary piston movement will displace hydraulic fluid in the primary section of the master cylinder to actuate the front brake system.
If the front (primary) brake system fails, initial brake p...

Disc Brakes -> AC-Delco Single Piston Rear Disc Brake (Type 2) -> Description
Vehicle: 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass GLS 3.1 V6 GAS
The caliper assembly, Fig. , has a single bore and is mounted to the support bracket with two mounting bolt and sleeve assemblies. Hydraulic pressure created by applying the brake pedal, is converted by the caliper to a stopping force. This force acts equally against the piston and the bottom of the piston bore to move the piston outward and to slide the caliper inward resulting in a clamping action. This clamping action presses the linings against the rotor, creating friction to stop the vehicle.
When the parking brake is applied, the external caliper parking brake lever moves and r...

Disc Brakes -> AC-Delco Single Piston Front Disc Brake (Type 2) -> Caliper Service -> Disassemble -> Replace
Vehicle: 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass 3.1 V6 GAS
Replace
- Remove approximately 2/3 of brake fluid from master cylinder.
- Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
- Using suitable C-clamp, push piston back into caliper bore, Fig. .
- If caliper assembly is being removed for service, remove inlet fitting attaching bolt, copper washer, and inlet fitting from caliper housing. Plug opening in inlet fitting to prevent fluid loss and contamination. Do not crimp brake hose, as this may damage internal structure of hose. If only shoe and lining assemblies are to be replaced, do not disconnect brake line fitting fr...

Disc Brakes -> AC-Delco Single Piston Front Disc Brake (Type 2) -> Troubleshooting -> Brake Roughness
Vehicle: 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass 3.1 V6 GAS
Brake Roughness
The most common cause of brake chatter on disc brakes is a variation in thickness of the disc. If roughness or vibration is encountered during highway operation or if pedal pulsation is experienced at low speeds, the disc may have excessive thickness variation. To check for this condition, measure the disc at 12 points with a micrometer at a radius approximately one inch from edge of disc. If thickness measurements vary by more than .0005 inch,...
