  • Disconnect ABS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) harness electrical connector.
  • Remove lower instrument panel trim panel below steering column. Trim panel screws are accessed by removing two square screw covers.
  • Remove ABS ECU mounting screws, Fig. , then the ECU.
  • Reverse procedure to install.
1998-2001
  • Disconnect ECU electrical connectors.
  • Remove ECU bracket to fender mounting nuts.
  • Remove ECU to HCU mounting bolts.

  • On Rio models, distance from top center of brake pedal to floor mat should be 6.69-6.93 inches.
  • On Sephia and Spectra models, distance from top center of brake pedal to floor mat should be 7.60-7.72 inches.
  • On all models, disconnect brake pedal switch electrical connector (E), Fig. .
  • Loosen locknuts (B) and turn switch (A) until it does not contact pedal.
  • Loosen locknuts (D) and turn rod (C) to adjust height of brake pedal.
  • Tighten brake pedal switch until plunger is completely compressed, then rotate additional 1/2 turn and tighten locknuts.

    • Disconnect brake lines from master cylinder and ABS control unit using flare nut wrench tool No. OK130 430 019, or equivalent.
    • Plug all open lines and ports to prevent entry of dirt or debris.

  • Secure master cylinder assembly in a suitable vise.
  • Remove reservoir cap, Fig. , then drain brake fluid into a suitable container.
  • Remove level sensor using a suitable screwdriver.
  • Remove reservoir mounting screw, then pry reservoir out of master cylinder. Discard seals.
  • Push primary piston into cylinder bore to ease snap ring removal, then remove snap ring and piston.
  • Push secondary piston into bore, then remove secondary piston stop screw.
  • Place a suitable shop towel in bore to catch secondary piston.
