The anti-lock system (ABS), Figs. and , controls each brake separately. The brake pedal force required to engage the system may vary with road surface conditions. A dry surface will require a high force, while a slippery surface will require a much less force. During system operation, the driver will sense a slight brake pedal pulsation accompanied by a rise in brake pedal height and a clicking sound. The pedal effort and pedal feel during normal braking are similar to a conventional power brake system.

Pump brake pedal several times to exhaust any vacuum in the booster.

  • Remove master cylinder as described in the "Hydraulic Brake Systems".
  • Disconnect vacuum hose from power brake unit.
  • From under instrument panel, remove brake pedal clevis pin, then detach pushrod from brake pedal.
  • Remove power brake unit attaching nuts, then remove power brake unit.
  • Reverse procedure to install noting the following:

Brake System Bleed

Manual

The primary and secondary (front and rear) hydraulic brake systems are individual systems and are bled separately. Bleed longest tube first on individual system being serviced. During complete bleeding operation, DO NOT allow the master cylinder reservoir to run dry. Never reuse brake fluid that has been drained from hydraulic system or has been allowed to stand in an open container for an extended period of time.
