System Operation

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) minimizes wheel lock-up during heavy braking. The ABS monitors each wheel's speed and controls brake fluid pressure to each wheel independently, Figs. through . A separate hydraulic line and solenoid valve for each wheel allows hydraulic pressure to be modulated, preventing wheel lock-up. The ABS can decrease, hold or increase hydraulic pressure.

The system continuously monitors all components, uses several methods to determine faults and notify the driver of malfunctions. When the engine is started, the ABS electrical circuitry is fu...

Vehicle: 1999 Buick Park Avenue 3.8 V6 GAS

The caliper assembly, Fig. , has a single bore and is mounted to the support bracket with two mounting bolt and sleeve assemblies. Hydraulic pressure created by applying the brake pedal is converted by the caliper to a stopping force. This force acts equally against the piston and the bottom of the piston bore to move the piston outward and to slide the caliper inward resulting in a clamping action. This clamping action presses the linings against the rotor, creating friction to stop the vehicle.

When the parking brake is applied, the external caliper parking brake lever moves and ro...
