- On models equipped with auxiliary transmission cooler, remove lower cooling line from mounting clip on fan shroud.
- On all models, lower vehicle, then remove air cleaner and ducting from throttle body and vehicle.
- Disconnect electrical connector for cooling fan, then remove attaching screw for coolant recovery system from crossmember.

- Recover refrigerant as outlined under , then remove serpentine drive belt.
- Disconnect clutch wire.
- Remove suction and discharge lines from compressor. Plug openings.
- Remove serpentine drive belt.
- Remove compressor mounting bolts, then the compressor.
- Reverse procedure to install. Torque compressor mounting bolts to 21 ft. lbs.

The two-speed electric cooling fan, Fig. , is controlled by A/C system pressure and engine coolant temperature. The A/C compressor pressure transducer and engine coolant temperature sensor send signals to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) which, in turn, activates the fan through a fan relay.
When A/C system is not operating, fan operating parameters are as follows:
- Fan will run on low speed when coolant temperature reaches 220°F and will stop when temperature falls to 210°F.
