Brake System Pressure Relief
The normal working pressure of the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is 1600-2100 psi. System pressure must be released prior to servicing any system component. Failure to reduce system pressure will result in personal injury. Release ABS system pressure as follows:
- Turn ignition switch to Off position.
- Apply brakes 45-50 times (until pedal is firm) to reduce system pressure.

Master Cylinder

- With engine stopped, pump brake pedal four or five times to deplete vacuum in power booster.
- Disconnect brake lines at master cylinder.
- Remove ground wire from combination valve bracket.
- Remove master cylinder retaining nuts, Fig. .
- Slide combination valve bracket off cylinder mounting studs. Loosen or disconnect brake lines at rear anti-lock valve and combination valve, if required.
- Remove master cylinder.
- Reverse procedure to install. Tighten master cylinder mounting nuts and fluid line nuts as specified in Fig. .

Master Cylinder/Power Booster Test
- Start engine and inspect booster vacuum hose connections for leaks.
- Stop engine and shift transmission into neutral.
- Pump brake pedal until all vacuum reserve in booster is depleted.
- Press and hold brake pedal under light foot pressure. Pedal should hold firm. If it falls away master cylinder is faulty.
- Start engine and note pedal action. Pedal should fall away slightly under light foot pressure, then hold firm.
- If no pedal action is felt, the power booster, vacuum supply or vacuum check valve are faulty. Proceed to "Power Booster Vacuum Test."

Brake Lines & Linings
Remove one of the front wheels and inspect the brake disc, caliper and linings. The wheel bearings should be inspected at this time and repacked if necessary.
Do not get any oil or grease on the linings. It is recommended that both front wheel sets be replaced whenever a respective pad is worn or damaged. Inspect and, if necessary, replace rear brake linings also.
If the caliper is cracked or fluid leakage through the casting is evident, it must be replaced as a unit.
