ABS Service
Before performing any repairs on the ABS system, note the following precautions:
- Before using electric welding equipment, disconnect EBCM.
- Carefully note routing, position and mounting ABS and TCS wiring, connectors, clips and brackets. ABS and TCS are extremely sensitive to electromagnetic interference.
- Do not use a fast charger when battery is connected. Never disconnect battery from system with engine running.
- Ignition switch must be in Off position when disconnecting EBCM.
- Many ABS system components ...

Power Brake Units -> Adjustments -> AC-Delco Single Diaphragm Type -> AC-Delco Tandem Diaphragm Type -> Air Method -> Brake Pedal -> Gauge Method -> Pushrod -> Toyota/GM Single Diaphragm Type
Vehicle: 2002 Oldsmobile Alero 3.4 V6 GAS
Brake Pedal
Toyota/GM Single Diaphragm Type
- With engine running and brake pedal in rest position, measure distance between face of pedal and floor mat.
- Distance should be 5.850-6.244 inches.
- If distance is not as specified, adjust pedal height as follows:
- Remove lefthand lower instrument panel trim section and air duct.
- Loosen stop lamp switch sufficiently to access pedal adjustment.
- Loosen locknut and rotate pedal pushrod as required to obtain specified pedal height. Tighten locknut.
- Adjust brake lamp switch position so plunger lightly contacts pedal stopper and brake lamps are off when pe...

Disc Brakes -> AC-Delco Single Piston Front Disc Brake -> Troubleshooting -> Brake Roughness
Vehicle: 2002 Oldsmobile Alero 2.2 L4 GAS
Brake Roughness
The most common cause of brake chatter on disc brakes is a variation in disc thickness. If roughness or vibration is encountered during highway operation or if pedal pulsation is experienced at low speeds, the disc may have excessive thickness variation. To inspect for this condition, measure the disc at 12 points with a micrometer at a radius approximately one inch from edge of disc. If thickness measurements vary by more than ...

Hydraulic Brake Systems -> General Motors -> Description -> Brake Distribution Valve & Switch -> Brake Warning Lamp Switches -> Combination Valve -> Components -> Diagonally Split System -> Failure Warning Switch -> Fluid Level Sensor -> Front & Rear Split System -> Metering Valve -> Proportioning Or Pressure Control Valve -> Warning Lamp
Vehicle: 2002 Oldsmobile Alero 3.4 V6 GAS
Front & Rear Split System
When the brake pedal is depressed, both the primary (front brake) and the secondary (rear brake) master cylinder pistons are moved simultaneously to exert hydraulic fluid pressure on their respective systems.
If the rear (secondary) brake system fails, initial brake pedal movement will cause the unrestricted secondary piston to bottom in the master cylinder bore. Primary piston movement will displace hydraulic fluid in the primary section of the master cylinder to actuate the front brake system.
If the front (primary) brake system fails, initial brake pedal mo...

System Operation
Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)
The ABS system will control hydraulic pressure in the individual wheel circuits to prevent any wheel from slipping. A separate hydraulic line and specific solenoid valves are provided for each wheel. The ABS can decrease, hold or increase hydraulic pressure to each wheel brake. However, it cannot increase hydraulic pressure above what the master cylinder is transmitting.
Enhanced Traction System (ETS)
The ETS limits wheel slip during acceleration when one or more of the drive wheels are accelerating too rapidly and the brake switch is off. T...
