  • Remove front wheels and temporarily secure discs with lug nuts.
  • Inspect brake pad thickness through caliper inspection hole.
  • Replace brake pads if thickness is less than .039 inch.
  • Remove bolt securing caliper flexible hose to front shock absorber.
  • Remove bottom side installation bolt, then lift up caliper and suspend securely.
  • Do not disconnect flexible hose from caliper.

  • Measure brake pedal height, Fig. .
  • On RX300 models, pedal height should be 7.598-7.992 inches.
  • On RX330 models, pedal height should be 5.906-6.299 inches.
  • On ES300 and ES330 models, pedal height should be 5.673-6.067 inches.
  • On LS430 models, pedal height should be 6.654-7.047 inches.
  • On IS300 models, pedal height should be 6.063-6.457 inches.
  • On all models, if pedal height measurements are not as specified, adjust as follows:
    • Remove undercover and lower dash finish panel.
    • Disconnect stop lamp switch.
    • Loosen stop light switch locknut, then back out switch.

  • Remove air cleaner cover with air cleaner hose.
  • Disconnect level warning switch connector.
  • Remove brake fluid with suitable syringe.
  • Remove brake lines with brake line wrench No. 09023-00100 and 09751-36011, or equivalents.
  • Remove master cylinder mounting nuts, then the master cylinder and gasket.
  • Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
    • Adjust length of booster pushrod before installation of master cylinder.
    • After installation, fill brake fluid and bleed brake system.
    • Inspect for brake fluid leaks.
    • Inspect and adjust brake pedal.

Disassemble

  • Remove rear disc brake assembly and suspend securely. Do not let caliper hang by brake hose.
  • Remove rotor disc, Fig. . If it cannot be removed easily, return shoe adjuster until wheel turns freely, then remove rotor.
  • Remove shoe return springs.
  • Remove front shoe as follows:
    • Slide out front shoe, remove adjuster.
    • Remove shoe strut with spring.
    • Disconnect tension spring and remove shoe.
  • Remove rear shoe as follows:
    • Slide out rear shoe and remove tension spring.
    • Disconnect parking brake cable from shoe lever.
    • Remove shoe hold-down cups, springs and pins.

Master Cylinder

  • Fill reservoir with fluid.
  • Disconnect tubes from master cylinder. Then slowly depress brake pedal and hold.
  • Block off outlet holes with fingers and release pedal. Repeat three or four times.

Brake Lines

Bleed wheel with longest brake line first, then work back to the master cylinder according to brake line length.

  • Connect tube to brake cylinder.
  • Depress pedal several times and hold, then loosen bleeder plug with pedal still held down.
  • When fluid stops coming out, tighten bleeder plug and release pedal. Repeat several times.
