ADJUSTMENTS
Brake Pedal
- With engine running and brake pedal in rest position, measure distance between face of pedal and floor mat.
- If distance is not 5.79-6.18 inches, adjust pedal height as follows:
- Remove left lower instrument panel trim section and air duct.
- Loosen stop lamp switch sufficiently to gain clearance for pedal adjustment.
- Loosen locknut and rotate pedal pushrod as needed to obtain specified pedal height, then tighten locknut.
- Adjust position of brake light switch so that plunger lightly contacts pedal stopper and brake lamps are off when pedal is release...

CALIPER REMOVAL
- Siphon enough brake fluid out of the master cylinder to bring fluid level to1/3 full to avoid fluid overflow when the caliper piston is pushed back into its bore.
- Raise vehicle and remove front wheels.
- Using a C-clamp, as illustrated in Fig. , push piston back together into caliper bores.
- If caliper assembly is to be serviced, remove inlet fitting attaching bolt, copper washer, and inlet fitting from caliper housing. Plug opening in inlet fitting to prevent fluid loss and contamination. Do not crimp brake hose, as this may damage internal structure of hose. If only shoe and...

POWER BRAKE UNITS, GENERAL MOTORS -> GENERAL SERVICE -> AIR METHOD -> Delco-Moraine Type -> GAUGE METHOD -> POWER BOOSTER REPLACE -> PRECAUTIONS -> PUSHROD ADJUSTMENT -> Single Diaphragm Type
Vehicle: 1990 Chevrolet Caprice 4.3 V6 GAS
Two basic types of power assist mechanisms are used: vacuum assist diaphragm assemblies, which use engine vacuum or, in some cases vacuum pressure developed by an external vacuum pump. The second type is a hydraulic pressure assist mechanism, which use pressure developed by an external pump (usually the power steering pump). Both systems act to increase the force exerted on the master cylinder piston by the operator. This in turn increases the hydraulic pressure delivered to the wheel cylinders, while decreasing driver effort necessary to obtain acceptable stopping performance.

HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM, GENERAL MOTORS -> SYSTEM OPERATION -> Diagonally Split System -> DUAL MASTER CYLINDER -> Front & Rear Split System
Vehicle: 1990 Chevrolet Caprice Classic 5.0 V8 GAS
DUAL MASTER CYLINDER
Front & Rear Split System
When the brake pedal is depressed, both the primary (front brake) and the secondary (rear brake) master cylinder pistons are moved simultaneously to exert hydraulic fluid pressure on their respective systems,Figs. and .
If the rear (secondary) brake system fails, initial brake pedal movement will cause the unrestricted secondary piston to bottom in the master cylinder bore. Primary piston movement will displace hydraulic fluid in the primary section of the master cylinder to actuate the front brake system.
If the front (primary) brak...
