- Remove wheel, drum and brake shoes.
- Disconnect hydraulic line at wheel cylinder. Do not pull metal line away from cylinder as the cylinder connection will bend metal line and make installation difficult. Line will separate from cylinder when cylinder is moved away from brake backing plate.
- Remove screws holding cylinder to brake plate and remove cylinder.
OVERHAUL
- Referring toFig. as a guide, remove boots, pistons, springs and cups from cylinder.
- Place all parts, except cylinder casting in clean brake fluid. Wipe cylinder walls with clean brake fluid.

The proportioning valve (when used),Fig. , provides balanced braking action between front and rear brakes under a wide range of braking conditions. The valve regulates the hydraulic pressure applied to the rear wheel cylinders, thus limiting rear braking action when high pressures are required at the front brakes. Removal
- Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
- Using a chisel, unstake and remove halfshaft retaining nut and washer.Discard nut and washer.
- Remove brake pads and caliper from the steering knuckle as outlined. Support the caliper by a wire strung from the coil spring. Do not disconnect the brake line from the caliper.
- Using tie rod end separator tool No. T85M-3395-A or equivalent, disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
- Remove ball joint pinch bolt. Separate control arm from steering knuckle.
