When working on or around brake assemblies, care must be taken to prevent breathing asbestos dust, as many manufacturers incorporate asbestos fibers in the production of brake linings. During routine service operations the amount of asbestos dust from brake lining wear is at a low level, due to a chemical break down during use and a few precautions will minimize exposure.Do not sand or grind brake linings unless suitable local exhaust ventilation equipment is used to prevent excessive asbestos exposure.

• Remove wheel, drum and brake shoes.
• Disconnect hydraulic line at wheel cylinder. Do not pull metal line away from cylinder as the cylinder connection will bend metal line and make installation difficult. Line will separate from cylinder when cylinder is moved away from brake backing plate.
• Remove screws holding cylinder to brake plate and remove cylinder.

OVERHAUL

• Referring toFig. as a guide, remove boots, pistons, springs and cups from cylinder.
• Place all parts, except cylinder casting in clean brake fluid. Wipe cylinder walls with clean brake fluid.

Proper adjustment of the master cylinder pushrod is necessary to ensure proper operation of the power brake system. A pushrod that is too long will prevent the master cylinder piston from completely releasing hydraulic pressure, eventually, causing the brakes to drag. A pushrod that is too short will cause excessive brake pedal travel and cause groaning noises to come from the booster when the brakes are applied. Although the brakes are self-adjusting,Fig. , an initial adjustment will be necessary after a brake repair. The initial adjustment can be obtained as follows:

• Determine inside diameter of drum brake surface using brake shoe gauge tool No. D81L-1103-A or equivalent. Adjust brake shoe diameter to fit gauge. Hold automatic adjusting lever out of engagement while rotating adjusting screw and ensure that screw turns freely.

Steel tubing is used to conduct hydraulic pressure to the brakes. All fittings, tubing and hose should be inspected for rusted, damaged or defective flared seats. The tubing is equipped with a double flare/inverted seat or I.S.O. flare to insure more positive seating in the fitting. To repair or reflare tubing, proceed as follows:

Before removing calipers, mark left and right hand calipers so they can be installed in the same position.

• Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
