Diagnose power brakes systems as if two separate systems exist. Check for faults in the regular brake system first. If no problem exists in the regular brake system, diagnosis the power brake circuit is necessary. For a quick check of proper power unit operation, press the brake pedal firmly and then start the engine. The pedal should fall away slightly and less pressure should be needed to maintain the pedal in any position. REMOVAL
- Siphon enough brake fluid out of the master cylinder to bring fluid level to1-3 full to avoid fluid overflow when the caliper piston is pushed back into its bore.
- Raise and support vehicle, remove front wheels.
- Using a C-clamp, as illustrated in Fig. , push piston back into its bore.
- Remove two mounting bolts and lift caliper away from disc.
DISASSEMBLE
- Disconnect hose from the caliper being careful not to lose copper washers.
- Remove caliper as outlined above.
- Drain brake fluid from caliper.

Pump brake pedal several times with engine off to deplete accumulator of fluid.
- Remove two nuts attaching master cylinder to booster, then move master cylinder away from booster with brake lines attached.
- Remove three hydraulic lines from booster. Plug and cap all lines and outlets.
- Remove retainer and washer securing booster pushrod to brake pedal arm.
- Remove four nuts attaching booster unit to dash panel.

Do not get any oil or grease on the linings. It is recommended that all linings be replaced in sets when worn or damaged.
If the caliper is cracked or fluid leakage through the casting is evident, it must be replaced as a unit.

SERVICE BRAKES
These brakes have self-adjusting shoe mechanisms that assure correct lining-to-drum clearances at all times. The automatic adjusters operate only when the brakes are applied as the vehicle is moving rearward or when the car comes to an uphill stop.
Although the brakes are self-adjusting, an initial adjustment is necessary after the brake shoes have been relined or replaced, or when the length of the adjusting screw has been changed during some other service operation. Refer to "Installation" for this procedure.
