POWER BRAKES, FORD MOTOR CO. -> PUSHROD ADJUSTMENT -> BENDIX TYPE -> SINGLE DIAPHRAGM BOOSTER
Vehicle: 1990 Lincoln Continental Signature 3.8 V6 GAS
Proper adjustment of the master cylinder pushrod is necessary to ensure proper operation of the power brake system. A pushrod that is too long will prevent the master cylinder piston from completely releasing hydraulic pressure, eventually, causing the brakes to drag. A pushrod that is too short will cause excessive brake pedal travel and cause groaning noises to come from the booster when the brakes are applied. A properly adjusted pushrod that remains assembled to the booster with which is was matched during production should not require service adjustment. However, if the ...

HYDRAULIC BRAKES, FORD MOTOR CO. -> BLEEDING BRAKES -> DUAL MASTER CYLINDER BLEEDING NOTES -> SYSTEM PRIMING -> TESTING DUAL MASTER CYLINDERS -> WHEEL BLEEDING SEQUENCE
Vehicle: 1990 Lincoln Continental 3.8 V6 GAS
Pressure bleeding is recommended for all hydraulic brake systems.
The bleeding operation itself is fairly well standardized. First step in all cases is cleaning the dirt from the filler cap before removing it from the master cylinder. This should be done thoroughly.
Pressure bleeding is fastest because the master cylinder doesn't have to be refilled several times, and the job can be done by one man. To prevent air from the pressure tank getting into the lines, do not shake the tank while air is being added to the tank or after it has been pressurized. Set the tank in the required ...

DISC BRAKES, FORD MOTOR CO. -> General Information -> GENERAL PRECAUTIONS
Vehicle: 1990 Lincoln Continental Signature 3.8 V6 GAS
- Grease or any other foreign material must be kept off the caliper, surfaces of the disc and external surfaces of the hub, during service procedures. Handling the brake disc and caliper should be done in a way to avoid deformation of the disc and nicking or scratching brake linings.
- If inspection reveals rubber piston seals are worn or damaged, they should be replaced immediately.
- During removal and installation of a wheel assembly, exercise care so as not to interfere ...

HYDRAULIC BRAKES, FORD MOTOR CO. -> WHEEL CYLINDERS -> OVERHAUL
Vehicle: 1990 Lincoln Continental 3.8 V6 GAS
- Remove wheel, drum and brake shoes.
- Disconnect hydraulic line at wheel cylinder. Do not pull metal line away from cylinder as the cylinder connection will bend metal line and make installation difficult. Line will separate from cylinder when cylinder is moved away from brake backing plate.
- Remove screws holding cylinder to brake plate and remove cylinder.
OVERHAUL
- Referring toFig. as a guide, remove boots, pistons, springs and cups from cylinder.
- Place all parts, except cylinder casting in clean brake fluid. Wipe cylinder walls with clean brake fluid.
- Examine cylinder bore. A scored ...

FRONT & REAR SPLIT SYSTEMS
When the brake pedal is depressed, both the primary (front brake) and the secondary (rear brake) master cylinder pistons are moved simultaneously to exert hydraulic fluid pressure on their respective independent hydraulic systems. The fluid displacement of the two master cylinders is proportioned to fulfill the requirements of each of the two independent hydraulic brake systems,Figs. and .
If a failure of a rear (secondary) brake system should occur, initial brake pedal movement causes the unrestricted secondary piston to bottom in the mas...

POWER BRAKES, FORD MOTOR CO. -> SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Vehicle: 1990 Lincoln Continental Signature 3.8 V6 GAS
The vacuum assist diaphragm assembly multiplies the force exerted on the master cylinder piston in order to increase the hydraulic pressure delivered to the wheel cylinders while decreasing the effort necessary to obtain acceptable stopping performance.
Vacuum assist units get their energy by opposing engine vacuum to atmospheric pressure. A piston, cylinder and flexible diaphragm utilize this energy to provide brake assistance. The diaphragm is balanced with engine vacuum until the brake pedal is de...
