BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT
- Run engine at normal operating condition.
- Measure the distance to the top center of the brake pedal pad.
- Free height should be approximately 7.35 inches.
- If brake pedal is not within specification, check the brake pedal, booster or master cylinder to ensure the correct parts are installed. Replace worn or damaged parts.

SYSTEM DISCHARGE
Before servicing any system component which contains high pressure, it is mandatory that the hydraulic pressure in the system be completely discharged. To discharge the system, turn ignition switch to Off position, then pump brake pedal a minimum of 20 times, until an increase in pedal force is clearly felt.

Steel tubing is used to conduct hydraulic pressure to the brakes. All fittings, tubing and hose should be inspected for rusted, damaged or defective flared seats. The tubing is equipped with a double flare/inverted seat or I.S.O. flare to insure more positive seating in the fitting. To repair or reflare tubing, proceed as follows:

HYDRAULIC BRAKES, FORD MOTOR CO. -> WHEEL CYLINDERS -> OVERHAUL

- Remove wheel, drum and brake shoes.
- Disconnect hydraulic line at wheel cylinder. Do not pull metal line away from cylinder as the cylinder connection will bend metal line and make installation difficult. Line will separate from cylinder when cylinder is moved away from brake backing plate.
- Remove screws holding cylinder to brake plate and remove cylinder.
OVERHAUL
- Referring toFig. as a guide, remove boots, pistons, springs and cups from cylinder.
- Place all parts, except cylinder casting in clean brake fluid. Wipe cylinder walls with clean brake fluid.

Remove wheels and inspect brake disc, caliper and linings. The wheel bearings should be inspected at this time and repacked if necessary. Do not get any grease on the linings.
If the caliper is cracked or fluid leakage through the casting is evident, it must be replaced as a unit.
Should it become necessary to remove the caliper for installation of new parts, clean all parts in alcohol, wipe dry using lint free cloths. Using an air hose, blow out drilled passages and bores.
