  • Raise and support front of vehicle and remove wheel.
  • Remove brake hose lock spring if necessary and lower pin bolt Figs. through , then pivot caliper body upwards.
  • Remove pad retainers, inner and outer shims and the pads.
  • Install new inner pad and pivot caliper downward.
  • Compress piston(s) by inserting bar through caliper opening and prying against torque member.

REMOVAL

  • Remove wheel, drum and brake shoes.
  • Loosen brake line fitting at wheel cylinder. Do not pull metal line away from cylinder.
  • Remove screw holding cylinder to backing plate.
  • Separate wheel cylinder from brake line and backing plate by pulling the cylinder outward and away from backing plate.

OVERHAUL

Note position of all parts as they are removed for proper installation.

Bleeding the hydraulic brake system is necessary if air has entered the system. A few causes for this condition are low fluid level, a hydraulic fluid leak, a hydraulic line is opened, or replacement of a hydraulic system component. Symptoms can be noted by an improper or loss of brake operation, and/or a low or spongy brake pedal.

  • Ensure master cylinder reservoir is full. Add suitable brake fluid as needed, and securely reinstall the master cylinder cap.

LESS ANTI-LOCK BRAKES

Do not spill brake fluid on painted surfaces, it may cause damage to the paint. If brake fluid is spilled, wash immediately with water.

  • Place container under master cylinder to avoid spillage, then fill master cylinder with brake fluid.
  • Connect hose to bleeder valves, then depress brake pedal several times.
  • With pressure applied to pedal open bleeder valve to release air trapped in system.
  • Close bleeder, then release pedal slowly.
  • Repeat steps 3 and 4 as outlined above until all air is removed from system.
