DRUM BRAKES, CHRYSLER CORP. -> General Information -> SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
Vehicle: 1991 Dodge Dakota Sport 5.2 V8 GAS
When working on or around brake assemblies, care must be taken to prevent breathing asbestos dust, as many manufacturers incorporate asbestos fibers in the production of brake linings. During routine service operations, the amount of asbestos dust from brake lining wear is at a low level due to a chemical breakdown during use, and a few precautions will minimize exposure. Do not sand or grind brake linings unless suitable local exhaust ventilation equipment is used to prevent excessive asbestos exposur...

HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEMS, CHRYSLER CORP. -> MASTER CYLINDER -> DIAGONALLY SPLIT SYSTEMS -> FRONT & REAR SPLIT SYSTEMS
Vehicle: 1991 Dodge Dakota Sport 5.2 V8 GAS
FRONT & REAR SPLIT SYSTEMS
When the brake pedal is depressed, both the primary (front brake) and the secondary (rear brake) master cylinder pistons are moved simultaneously to exert hydraulic fluid pressure on their respective independent hydraulic systems. The fluid displacement of the two master cylinders is proportioned to fulfill the requirements of each of the two independent hydraulic brake systems.
If a failure of a rear (secondary) brake system should occur, initial brake pedal movement causes the unrestricted secondary piston to bottom in the master cylinder bore. Primary...

Vehicle: 1991 Dodge Dakota 2.5 L4 GAS
The Bendix Anti-Lock 10 Brake System has self diagnosis capability. The self diagnosis cycle begins when the ignition switch is in the ON position. An electrical check is completed on the ABS components such as wheel speed sensors continuity, system continuity and other relay continuity. During this check the Anti-Lock Light will be on for approximately one to two seconds.
The ABS system is constantly monitored by the CAB. If the CAB detects a fault, it can disable the brake system anti-lock function. Depending on the fault the CAB will light either one or both brake system w...

Vehicle: 1991 Dodge Dakota Sport 3.9 V6 GAS
The electronic control module in this system has the capability of generating and storing fault codes. If a fault is detected, the system will illuminate the amber anti-lock warning lamp and set a fault code. When a fault code is set, the amber anti-lock warning lamp will illuminate. In most cases, the red brake warning lamp will also light.
When a problem in the system is suspected, preliminary diagnosis should begin with a fluid level check and a visual inspection of the electrical and hydraulic connections in the system. If obvious faults are not found, a road test will he...
