- Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove brake drum. If brake lining is dragging on brake drum, back off brake adjustment by rotating adjustment screw. Refer to individual truck chapter for procedure. If brake drum is rusted or corroded to axle flange and cannot be removed, lightly tap flange to drum mounting surface with a suitable hammer.

- Raise and support vehicle.
- If vehicle is equipped with a transfer case,place drain pan or suitable container underneath transfer case. Remove drain plug and drain fluid.
- Place index marks on pinion flange yoke and differential pinion flange.
- Remove bolts and nuts holding yoke, then separate pinion flange yoke from differential pinion flange.
- Remove sliding yoke from transfer case, then remove propeller shaft from vehicle.
- Inspect propeller shaft for dents or other damage. Replace shaft if damaged.
