CALIPER REMOVAL
  • Siphon enough brake fluid out of the master cylinder to bring fluid level to 1/3 full to avoid fluid overflow when the caliper piston is pushed back into its bore.
  • Raise vehicle and remove front wheels.
  • Using a C-clamp, as illustrated in Fig. , push piston back into its bore.
  • If caliper assembly is to be serviced, remove inlet fitting attaching bolt, copper washer, and inlet fitting from caliper housing. Plug opening in inlet fitting to prevent fluid loss and contamination. Do not crimp brake hose, as this may damage internal structure of hose. If only shoe and linin...

Power Brake Units -> General Service
Vehicle: 1992 Chevrolet Caprice Classic LTZ 5.7 V8 GAS

Two basic types of power assist mechanisms are used: vacuum assist diaphragm assemblies, which use engine vacuum or, in some cases vacuum pressure developed by an external vacuum pump. The second type is a hydraulic pressure assist mechanism, which use pressure developed by an external pump (usually the power steering pump). Both systems act to increase the force exerted on the master cylinder piston by the operator. This in turn increases the hydraulic pressure delivered to the wheel cylinders, while decreasing driver effort necessary to obtain acceptable stopping performance.

SYSTEM

The function of the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is to minimize wheel lockup during heavy braking on most road surfaces. The system performs this function by monitoring wheel speed and controlling the brake fluid pressure to each front wheel and both rear wheels during braking. This allows the driver to retain directional stability and better steering capability.

1993-94 Eldorado, Seville & DeVille models with the 4.6L Northstar engine are also equipped with a real-time traction control system (TCS). The purpose of the traction control system is to prevent excessive wheel spin ...

Disc Brakes -> AC-Delco Single Piston Front Disc Brake (Type 1) -> Troubleshooting -> BRAKE ROUGHNESS
Vehicle: 1992 Chevrolet Caprice Classic 5.0 V8 GAS

BRAKE ROUGHNESS

The most common cause of brake chatter on disc brakes is a variation in thickness of the disc. If roughness or vibration is encountered during highway operation or if pedal pulsation is experienced at low speeds, the disc may have excessive thickness variation. To check for this condition, measure the disc at 12 points with a micrometer at a radius approximately one inch from edge of disc. If thic...
