BRAKE SERVICE PROCEDURES FOR 1992 Ford Mustang AUTOMOBILES
Includes anti-lock brakes, disc, drum, power and hydraulic brake services diagnostics and procedures for domestic and imported 1992 Ford Mustang cars and light trucks from 1990+.
Disc Brakes -> Front Disc Brakes -> Precautions
Vehicle: 1992 Ford Mustang LX 2.3 L4 GAS
- On models equipped with anti-lock brakes, prior to disconnecting any hydraulic lines or fittings, hydraulic system must be depressurized by pumping the brake pedal a minimum of 25 times with ignition switch in OFF position.
- On all models, grease or any other foreign material must be kept off caliper, disc surfaces and external hub surfaces during service procedures. Handling brake disc and caliper should be done in a way to avoid deforming disc and nicking or scratching brake linings.
- If inspection reveals rubber piston seals are worn or damaged, they should be replaced immediately.
- Du...

Hydraulic Brake Systems -> Hydraulic Brake System Flush
Vehicle: 1992 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 V8 GAS
Whenever new brake components are installed in the hydraulic system, it is recommended that the entire hydraulic system be thoroughly flushed with clean brake fluid.
It may sometime become necessary to flush out the system due to the presence of mineral oil, kerosene, gasoline, etc., which will cause swelling of rubber piston cups and valves so they become inoperative. The procedure is as follows:
Flushing is...

Disc Brakes -> Front Disc Brakes -> INSPECTION
Vehicle: 1992 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 V8 GAS
Remove wheels and inspect brake disc, caliper and linings. The wheel bearings should be inspected at this time and repacked if necessary. Do not get any grease on the linings.
If the caliper is cracked or fluid leakage through the casting is evident, it must be replaced as a unit.
Should it become necessary to remove the caliper when installing new parts, clean all parts in alcohol, then wipe dry using lint-free cloths. Using an air hose, blow out drilled passages and bores. Check dust boots for punctures or tears. If punctures or tears are evident, install new boots during assembly.

Disc Brakes -> Rear Disc Brakes & Parking Brakes -> BRAKE DISC SERVICE
Vehicle: 1992 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 V8 GAS
Disc brake service is extremely critical due to the close tolerances required in machining the brake disc to ensure proper brake operation.
Maintaining close control of the shape of the rubbing surfaces is necessary to prevent brake roughness. In addition, the surface finish must be non-directional and maintained at a micro-inch finish. This is necessary to avoid pulls and erratic performance and promote long lining life and equal lining wear of both the left and right brakes.
Do not attempt to refinish the rubbing surfaces unless precision equipment...

Hydraulic Brake Systems -> Description -> BRAKE DISTRIBUTION VALVE & SWITCH -> BRAKE WARNING LIGHT SWITCHES -> COMBINATION VALVE -> Description -> DIAGONALLY SPLIT SYSTEMS -> Failure Warning Switch -> FRONT & REAR SPLIT SYSTEMS -> Metering Valve -> Proportioner Or Pressure Control Valves -> PROPORTIONING VALVE -> Testing -> Testing Warning Light System
Vehicle: 1992 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 V8 GAS
FRONT & REAR SPLIT SYSTEMS
When the brake pedal is depressed, both the primary (front brake) and the secondary (rear brake) master cylinder pistons are moved simultaneously to exert hydraulic fluid pressure on their respective independent hydraulic systems. The fluid displacement of the master cylinder is proportioned to fulfill the requirements of each of the two independent hydraulic brake systems, Fig. .
If a failure of a rear (secondary) brake system should occur, initial brake pedal movement causes the unrestricted secondary piston to bottom in the master cylinder bore. Primary p...

Disc Brakes -> Rear Disc Brakes & Parking Brakes -> Adjustments -> CONTINENTAL, COUGAR, MARK VII & THUNDERBIRD -> ESCORT & TRACER -> MARK VII -> MUSTANG -> Parking Brake -> PROBE -> SABLE & TAURUS
Vehicle: 1992 Ford Mustang LX 2.3 L4 GAS
MARK VII
Parking Brake
- Fully release parking brake, then place transmission in neutral and support vehicle at rear axle.
- Tighten adjuster nut until levers on calipers just begin to move, then loosen adjuster nut until levers just return to stop position.
- Apply and release parking brake. Check levers on caliper to determine if they are fully returned by attempting to pull lever rearward. If lever moves, the adjustment is too tight and must be readjusted.
