The evaporator core is located in front of the heater core in the heater/evaporator housing. Remove heater/evaporator housing as described under "Heater Core, Replace." After removing, disassemble heater/evaporator housing to gain access to evaporator core.

- Drain cooling system, then discharge A/C refrigerant system.
- Remove heater core as described under "Heater Core, Replace."
- Remove electronic switching unit.

- Loosen each LH and RH shouldered bolt from rear axle.
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Rotate wheel until threaded hole, from which the shouldered bolt has been removed, faces forward and up at about a 45° angle on models with diagonal swing axle and exactly forward on models with diagonal swing axle and starting torque compensation.

- Unscrew exhaust shielding plate.
- On models with 4MATIC, unscrew exhaust shielding plate.
- Lift transmission and support.
- Unscrew hex, head screws and hex nut and remove rear engine carrier with engine mount.
- Unscrew cross bridge.
- On all models, loosen propeller shaft clamping nut for approx. two turns without sliding back rubber sleeve (sliding along).
- Remove front propeller shaft from transmission. Flexible coupling remains on propeller shaft.
