BRAKE SERVICE PROCEDURES FOR 1993 BMW 750IL AUTOMOBILES

Disc Brakes -> Brake Pad Service -> 318 & 325 -> Except 318 & 325 -> Front Brake Pads, Replace -> Rear Brake Pads, replace

Front Brake Pads, Replace
318 & 325
- Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels.
- Remove brake pad wear indicator connector from left side of caliper.
- Remove anti-rattle clip, then the caliper sliding bolt plastic caps.
- Lift brake hose out of holder, then remove caliper sliding bolts.
- Remove caliper toward rear. Remove brake pads, then suspend caliper from frame with wire.
- Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
- Compress caliper piston into bore.
- Check fluid level and bleed brake system as necessary.
- Tighten to specifications.

- Remove master cylinder from booster.
- Remove lower left trim panel.
- Disconnect bayonet pin and clip from booster pushrod, below instrument panel. Fig. .
- Detach booster from pedal base. Remove booster from engine compartment.
- Reverse procedure to install.

Front
- Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheel.
- Drain a moderate amount of brake fluid from reservoir with a syringe.
- Disconnect caliper brake hose.
- Remove caliper bolts and disconnect brake pad wear sensor electrical connector, if necessary.
- Remove caliper toward rear.
- Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
- Tighten bolts to specifications.
- Bleed brake system.
- Ensure brake pad wear sensor wire does not contact rotor or wheel.

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) consists of a control unit, hydraulic unit, speed sensors and wiring harness. Each speed sensor has a gear wheel which runs past the permanently magnetized edge of the speed sensor installed in the wheel hub. The rotary motion of the wheels is recorded by inductive sensors and an electric signal is sent to the electronic control unit.

- Connect suitable pressure bleeder to brake fluid reservoir. Maximum charging pressure is 43.5 psi.
- Attach bleeder hose and container to right rear wheel. Bleed until no bubbles appear.
- Repeat step 2 for left rear, right front and left front wheels.
- Support rear suspension at wheel carriers and lower car so rear suspension compresses to its normal loaded position (to prevent damage to output shaft joints). Wheels must be able to turn freely.

- Disconnect battery ground cable.
- Remove coolant expansion tank.
- Remove brake lines from hydraulic unit as follows: front left; front right; rear left; rear right.
- Remove brake hydraulic lines from master cylinder to hydraulic unit.
- Remove cover from top of hydraulic cover, then loosen, but do not remove, bolts for hydraulic unit.
- Remove retaining screws and pull off multiple pin connector and disconnect ground wire.
