Whenever new brake components are installed in the hydraulic system, it is recommended that the entire hydraulic system be thoroughly flushed with clean brake fluid.

It may sometime become necessary to flush out the system due to the presence of mineral oil, kerosene, gasoline, etc., which will cause swelling of rubber piston cups and valves so they become inoperative. The procedure is as follows:

MASTER CYLINDER

Except Capri, Escort, Sable, Taurus & Tracer

• On models equipped with ABS, depress brake pedal several times to exhaust all vacuum in the system.
• On all models, disconnect brake lines from master cylinder, then all necessary electrical connectors.
• On models equipped with ABS, disconnect hydraulic control unit supply hose at master cylinder. Secure hose in a position to prevent brake fluid loss.
• On all models, remove nuts retaining master cylinder to brake booster.
• Remove master cylinder.
• Reverse procedure to install. After installation is complete, fill master cyli...

• Inspect components for damage and unusual wear. Replace as necessary.
• Inspect wheel cylinders. Boots which are torn, cut, or heat damaged indicate need for wheel cylinder replacement. Fluid spilling from boot center hole, or wetness around wheel cylinder ends indicates cup leakage and need for wheel cylinder replacement. A small amount of fluid is always present and is considered normal, acting as lubricant for cylinder pistons.

SERVICE BRAKES

Although the brakes are self-adjusting, Fig. , an initial adjustment will be necessary after a brake repair. The initial adjustment can be obtained as follows:

• Determine inside diameter of drum brake surface using brake shoe gauge tool No. D81L-1103-A, or equivalent. Adjust brake shoe diameter to fit gauge. Hold automatic adjusting lever out of engagement while rotating adjusting screw and ensure screw turns freely.
• Install drum and wheel assembly, then adjust wheel bearings as shown in Fig. .

Complaints about power brake operation should be handled as if two separate systems exist. Check for faults in the hydraulic system first. If it is satisfactory, start inspecting the power brake circuit. For a quick check of proper power unit operation, press the brake pedal firmly and then start the engine. The pedal should fall away slightly and less pressure should be needed to maintain the pedal in any position.

Remove wheels and inspect brake disc, caliper and linings. The wheel bearings should be inspected at this time and repacked if necessary. Do not get any grease on the linings.

If the caliper is cracked or fluid leakage through the casting is evident, it must be replaced as a unit.

Should it become necessary to remove the caliper when installing new parts, clean all parts in alcohol, then wipe dry using lint-free cloths. Using an air hose, blow out drilled passages and bores. Check dust boots for punctures or tears. If punctures or tears are evident, install new boots during assembly.
