On 400SE, 400SEL and 600SEL, then tandem master cylinder with a built in switch over valve must be replace as an assembly with brake booster.
On models except 400SE, 400SEL and 600SEL, refer to Figs. through for master cylinder service.
Disassemble
- Position cylinder in suitable soft jawed vise.
- Remove expansion tank, then remove cap and strainer.
- Using suitable mandrel, push piston inward.
- Using suitable pliers, remove cylinder pin from housing.

- Raise vehicle and support.
- Unscrew exhaust shielding plate.
- On models with 4MATIC, unscrew exhaust shielding plate.
- Lift transmission and support.
- Unscrew cross bridge.
- Unscrew hex, head screws and hex nut and remove rear engine carrier with engine mount.
- On all models, loosen propeller shaft clamping nut for approx. two turns without sliding back rubber sleeve (sliding along).
- Remove front propeller shaft from transmission. Flexible coupling remains on propeller shaft.

- Open hood to vertical position.
- Open expansion tank cap to release pressure
- Do not open pressure cap until coolant temperature is below 90°C (194°F).
- Remove bottom engine compartment panel.
- Drain coolant at radiator by fitting a hose (inner diameter 12 mm) onto the connection (arrow) and unbolting drain plug.
- Drain coolant into a suitable container.
- Detach coolant hoses from the radiator and from the coolant pump.
