The brake booster is located inline between the master cylinder and the brake pedal. It serves to mechanically boost the force pushing the pistons of the master cylinder.

The brake booster consists of a power cylinder section and a power piston section. The power cylinder is made up of a front shell, rear shell and a diaphragm. The front and rear shells are connected with the diaphragm placed in between the two. The power cylinder chamber is closed to the atmosphere and the left and right chambers of the diaphragm are kept sealed.

  • Remove brake drum, then disconnect brake line from back plate.
  • Using suitable pliers, remove shoe hold-down springs, Figs. and .
  • Remove shoes.
  • Reverse procedure to install. Refer to Fig. , for tightening specifications.

Impreza & Legacy

  • Raise and support vehicle, then remove rear wheels.
  • Remove brake drum. If difficult to remove brake drum, remove adjusting hole cover from back plate, then turn adjusting screw until shoe separate from drum.

  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Remove front wheels.
  • Disconnect brake hose from caliper. Plug hose to prevent fluid leakage.
  • On Loyale models, remove outer parking brake cable clip and disconnect cable.
  • On all except Justy with 12 inch wheels, remove caliper lockpin, rotate caliper on guide pin, then remove caliper.
  • On Justy with 12 inch wheels, remove caliper to support retaining bolts, then the boot protector and caliper.

  • Remove master cylinder assembly.
  • Disconnect vacuum hose from brake booster.
  • Working from inside the passenger compartment, remove snap pin and operating rod clevis pin from brake pedal assembly.
  • Remove brake booster retaining nuts, then brake booster from vehicle.
  • Reverse procedure to install. Torque brake booster retaining nuts to 9-17 ft. lbs.
