- Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
- Remove brake drum. If brake drum cannot be remove easily, insert a suitable screwdriver through hole in backing plate, then push adjuster lever away from adjuster and back of adjustment tension.
- Remove two shoe return springs, using suitable tool, Fig. .
- Push lever upward, then remove cable, shoe guide, plate and cable guide.
- Remove spring from lever, then the lever and spring.

- Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
- Disconnect brake hydraulic line from frame bracket and from caliper using line wrench tool No. 09751-36011, or equivalent.
- Remove caliper mounting bolts, then the caliper.
- Reverse procedure to install and bleed brake system.
Overhaul
- Remove caliper as outlined under "Caliper, Replace."
- Remove anti-squeal shim(s) and cylinder boot set ring, Fig. .

- Disconnect tubes from master cylinder. Then slowly depress brake pedal and hold.
- Block off outlet holes with fingers, and release pedal. Repeat three or four times.

- On MR2, remove luggage compartment trim cover by removing two clips after disengaging inner part of clip.
- On all models, remove brake fluid with syringe.
- On RAV4, remove air cleaner cover with air cleaner hose.
- On all models, label and disconnect brake lines using line wrench 09751-36011, 09023-00100, or equivalent. Then cap brake lines from master cylinder.
