Hydraulic Brake Systems -> Component Replacement -> FLUID RESERVOIR -> Installation -> MASTER CYLINDER -> Removal -> TYPE 1 -> TYPE 2 -> TYPE 4 -> TYPE 5 -> TYPES 3, 5, 6 & 7 -> WHEEL CYLINDER

MASTER CYLINDER
TYPE 1
  • Place drain pan under the master cylinder.
  • Using a suitable wrench, disconnect brake lines from the master cylinder. Plug all lines and fittings.
  • Remove master cylinder-to-brake booster attaching nuts.
  • Pull master cylinder outward and away from brake booster.
  • Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
    • Prior to installing a new or rebuilt master cylinder, it should be bench bled as described under "Brake System Bleed."
    • Torque master cylinder-to-brake booster attaching nuts to 170-230 inch lbs.
    • Torque brake line fittings to 170 inch lbs.

Disc Brakes -> Type 7-Kelsey-Hayes Dual Pin Floating Caliper Disc Brake, Rear -> Caliper Service -> CALIPER OVERHAUL

CALIPER OVERHAUL
  • Remove caliper from rotor as described under "Brake Pads, Service."
  • Place a small piece of wood between piston and caliper fingers, then carefully depress brake pedal to hydraulically push piston out of bore. Prop brake pedal to any position below first inch of brake pedal travel to prevent brake fluid loss.
  • If pistons are to be removed from both calipers, disconnect brake hose at frame bracket after removing piston, then cap brake line and repeat procedure to remove piston from other caliper.
  • Disconnect brake hose from caliper.

Bleeding the hydraulic brake system is necessary if air has entered the system. Symptoms can be noted by loss of brake operation, and/or a low or spongy brake pedal.

The hydraulic fluid is bled or flushed from the system through bleeder valves located on the calipers, wheel cylinders, and some master cylinders. When bleeding the hydraulic brake system, use only specified brake fluid. Never reuse old brake fluid removed from the system.
