  • Raise and support vehicle and remove rear wheel assembly.
  • Remove caliper attaching bolts, then the caliper, leaving brake hose attached, and position caliper out of way.
  • Remove disc plate attaching screws and the disc plate, Fig. . If disc plate is difficult to remove, remove dust cap, insert screwdriver into hole and turn adjuster to increase shoe clearance.
  • Remove upper and lower return springs, then the front and rear hold pins.
  • Remove brake shoes, then separate adjuster and operating lever assembly from shoes.

  • Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove front wheels.
  • Remove parts in order as shown in Fig. , noting the following:
    • After removing lower lock bolt, rotate caliper upward and support with rope.
  • Reverse procedure to install, noting the following.
    • Push the piston inward using piston pushing tool No. 490221600C, or equivalent, then install new pads.

  • Raise and support vehicle with jack stands.
  • Fill reservoir with brake fluid, ensure reservoir is at least half full at all times during bleeding procedure.
  • After removing bleeder cap, connect one end of transparent vinyl tube to bleeder and place other end in a clean, clear container that is half full with brake fluid.
  • One person should depress pedal a few times, then hold the pedal depressed.
  • A second person should loosen the bleeder screw and drain fluid, then retighten screw to specifications.

Component Replacement

ABS Relay

  • Remove cruise control actuator assembly, then disconnect relay electrical connector.
  • Remove relay mounting nut, then the relay.
  • Reverse procedure to install. Torque relay mounting nut to 70-95 inch lbs. and cruise control actuator mounting nuts to 26-34 inch lbs.
Hydraulic Unit

  • Disconnect battery ground cable.
  • Remove hydraulic unit in numbered sequence, Fig. .
