Hydraulic Brake Systems -> Brake System Bleed
Vehicle: 1996 Acura RL 3.5 V6 GAS
Bleeding hydraulic brake system is necessary if air has entered the system due to low fluid level, hydraulic system leaks or component replacement. Noteworthy symptoms include insufficient brake operation and/or a low or spongy brake pedal.
- Fill master cylinder reservoir with DOT 3 or 4 brake fluid. After bleeding each wheel check master cylinder level and fill as required.
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Position drain pan under wheel being bled. Refer to " Hydraulic Brake Specifications," for wheel bleeding sequence.

- Raise and support front of vehicle and remove wheels.
- Remove caliper pin bolt, then pivot caliper up away from rotor.
- Remove brake pad shims and pads, Figs. through .
- Clean caliper and inspect for excessive wear or damage.
- Install pad retainers, then pad shims and pads, Figs. through .
- Back out bleed screw and push in piston to allow caliper to fit over pads, then tighten bleed screw to specification.

- Raise and support front of vehicle and remove wheels.
- Remove banjo bolt and disconnect brake line from caliper. Secure hose in raised position to prevent leakage.
- Remove caliper pin bolt, then caliper, Figs. through .
- On Legend, TL and Vigor models, remove pad spring from caliper.
- On all models, position a block of wood or shop rag in caliper opposite piston, then carefully remove piston by applying compressed air into fluid inlet port. Use only as much air pressure as is needed to remove piston.
