Type 1 Combination Valve
This valve assembly, Fig. , is comprised of a warning switch, and a dual proportioning valve.
The warning switch detects system failure when a pressure difference occurs between the diagonally split systems. In such a case, the valve piston shuttles toward the side with the low pressure forcing the switch plunger upward over the piston's tapered shoulder. This movement closes the switch contacts causing the brake warning lamp to illuminate. Upon restoration of equalized system pressure the brake warning switch will reset.

These units are of the vacuum suspended type. Some units are of the single diaphragm type, Fig. , while others are of the tandem diaphragm type, Fig. . Both single piston and double piston or split system type master cylinders are used.

Decreasing Brake Pedal Travel
If a decreasing brake pedal is encountered, the power brake unit may be binding internally. To test the power brake unit for this condition proceed as follows:
- Place transmission shift lever into Neutral and start engine.
- Increase engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM, close throttle and completely depress brake pedal.
- Slowly release brake pedal and stop engine.
- Remove vacuum check valve and hose from power brake unit. Observe for backward movement of brake pedal.

Master Cylinder
When disassembling the master cylinder, note the position of all parts as they are removed for proper installation.
When disassembled, wash all parts in denatured alcohol or clean brake fluid only. Use an air hose to blow out all passages, orifices and valve holes. Air dry and place parts on clean paper or lint-free cloth.

- Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheels.
- If applicable, ensure wheel bearings are properly adjusted.
- Using suitable spacers install lug nuts or bolts, then tighten to specifications.
- Mount a dial indicator to a convenient part of the vehicle (steering knuckle, tie rod, disc brake caliper housing).
- Position dial indicator plunger so it contacts the disc at a point one inch from the outer edge.

Removal
- Raise and support rear of vehicle.
- Remove tire and wheel assembly, then remove brake drum. If brake lining is dragging on brake drum, back off brake adjustment by rotating adjustment screw.
- Using suitable pliers, remove adjuster lever spring, Fig. .
- Remove adjuster lever.
- Turn automatic adjuster screw out to expand shoes past wheel cylinder boot.
- Disconnect parking brake cable from parking brake lever.
