Brake System Bleed

  • If brake fluid has been drained from master cylinder, bleed as follows:
    • Fill reservoir with DOT 3 brake fluid, then depress and hold brake pedal.
    • With master cylinder outlet port plugged, release brake pedal.
    • Repeat 3 to 4 times, refilling reservoir as necessary.
  • With engine running, bleed brake lines as follows:
    • Bleed line to wheel that is diagonally opposite master cylinder.
    • Bleed line to wheel that is nearest to master cylinder.
    • Bleed line to remaining rear wheel, then to remaining front wheel.
    • Ensure master cylinder is kept full.

Bleeding the hydraulic brake system is necessary if air has entered the system. Symptoms can be noted by loss of brake operation, and/or a low or spongy brake pedal.

The hydraulic fluid is bled or flushed from the system through bleeder valves located on the calipers, wheel cylinders, and some master cylinders. Use only specified brake fluid when bleeding the system. Never reuse brake fluid that was removed from the system.

  • Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheels.
  • If applicable, ensure wheel bearings are properly adjusted.
  • Using suitable spacers, install lug nuts or bolts, then tighten to specifications.
  • Mount a dial indicator to a convenient part of the vehicle, such as steering knuckle, tie rod, or caliper housing.
