Front, Replace
XJS
- Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove clips (1) securing retaining pins (2), Fig. .
- Remove pins and anti-rattle springs (3), then the pads (4).
- Compress pistons into caliper bores using piston compression tool No. 64932392, or equivalent, Fig. .
- Reverse procedure to install.
XJ6 & XJ12 & 1995-97 XJR
- Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
- Disconnect brake pad wear sensor connector.
- Remove lower guide pin bolt.
- Pivot caliper upward and remove brake pads.
- Compress piston and reverse procedure to install.

Master Cylinder
- Remove master cylinder as previously described.
- Carefully pry out master cylinder hydraulic line adapters from sealing grommets.
- Remove sealing grommets from master cylinder by levering out using suitable screwdriver.
- Press primary piston stop pin in to relieve secondary piston stop pin pressure.
- Remove front grommet sealing housing stop pin. Maintain pressure on primary piston and remove circlip.

Accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are accessed by connecting a suitable programmed scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC) and following the tool manufacturer's instructions. On XJS, XJ6 and XJ12 and 1995-97 XJR models, the DLC is located on the instrument panel, between the steering column and center console.

The following tests on the vacuum system should only be performed if the hydraulic system is in satisfactory condition.
- Raise and support front of vehicle. Ensure one wheel will rotate freely.
- Start engine and allow vacuum to accumulate.
- Apply brake pedal several times. Ensure wheel is free to rotate immediately after pedal is released.
- If brakes bind, booster is faulty.
- With engine running, apply brake pedal several times and check operation of pedal.
- If response is sluggish, check condition of vacuum hoses and booster unit air filter.
