ABS systems with ASR or ETS may only be inspected using Hand-Held Tester (HHT) tool No. 965 589 00 01 00, or equivalent scan tool.

  • Connect suitable brake fluid changing tool following tool manufacturer's instructions. Bleed pressure is 29 psi.
  • Open righthand rear brake caliper bleed screw and allow approximately 2.7 ounces of brake fluid to flow out without any bubbles.
  • Tighten bleed screw to specifications.
  • Repeat bleeding procedure at lefthand rear, righthand front and lefthand front calipers.
  • On S320, S350, S420, S500 and S600 models, open master cylinder bleed screw and allow brake fluid to flow without any bubbles. Tighten bleed screw to specifications.

Master Cylinder

Brake master cylinder must not be repair on C36, C220, C230, C280, E300, E320, E420, E430, S420, S500, S600 & SL600. Replace only.

Disassemble
  • Position cylinder in suitable soft jawed vise, Fig. .
  • Slightly press piston using suitable alignment tool and remove cylindrical pin using suitable pliers.
  • Remove locking ring and piston with secondary seal package from housing using suitable pliers.
  • Remove complete piston for floating circuit using light blows to housing on suitable wood support.

  • Insert 1.1025 inches thick metal segment (brake disc section) into fixed caliper and carefully force pistons out against stop with compressed air.
  • Remove piston using piston-turning pliers tool No. 000 589 50 37 00, or equivalent.
  • Remove piston seal from groove in cylinder bore.
Inspection
  • If piston is stuck or there are scores or rusted bores, replace complete caliper.
  • Remove deposits on piston with soft brass wire brush or rough cloth only. If there is noticeable damage to chrome plating, replace piston.
