- Remove lower radiator hose from water pump, then lower vehicle.
- Remove timing belt as outlined in MOTOR's Auto Repair Manual.

This engine does not require a specified bleed procedure. After filling cooling system, run engine to operating temperature with radiator/pressure cap off. Air will then automatically be bled through cap opening.
1.8L, 1.9L & 2.0L Engines
Escort & Tracer
After filling cooling system, run engine for approximately 12 minutes with radiator pressure cap off, then top off radiator. Secure cap, then with engine running, fill coolant reservoir to FULL HOT mark with coolant.

- Remove radiator pressure cap from radiator filler neck.
- Drain coolant level below radiator upper hose.
- Disconnect electrical connector from cooling fan switch on thermostat housing, Fig. .
- Disconnect upper radiator hose at thermostat housing, then remove two thermostat housing retaining bolts from cylinder head.
- Remove thermostat housing and gasket.
- Remove thermostat.
- Reverse procedure to install. Torque thermostat housing bolts to 14-22 ft. lbs.
