System Components
Refer to Figs. and for ABS component locations.
Power Brake Booster
The power brake booster reduces the effort required to push the brake pedal and apply the brakes. Engine vacuum allows for this power assist.
A vacuum booster hose from the engine contains a vacuum booster hose check valve. When the engine is shut off, the valve closes, trapping engine vacuum within the power brake booster. This reserve vacuum allows for several assisted brake applications with the engine off.
Brake Master Cylinder
Aspire
The brake master cylinder is a tandem hydraulic servo. When the b...

Hydraulic Brake Systems -> Hydraulic Brake System Flush
Vehicle: 1996 Mercury Tracer Trio 1.9 L4 GAS
Whenever new brake components are installed in the hydraulic system, it is recommended that the entire hydraulic system be thoroughly flushed with clean brake fluid.
It may sometime become necessary to flush out the system due to the presence of mineral oil, kerosene, gasoline, etc., which will cause swelling of rubber piston cups and valves and render them inoperative.
Flushing is performed at ...

Disc Brakes -> Front Disc Brakes -> Troubleshooting -> Brake Roughness -> Lateral Runout -> Thickness Variation -> Wheel Bearing Looseness
Vehicle: 1996 Mercury Tracer LTS 1.8 L4 GAS
Brake Roughness
Thickness Variation
The most common cause of brake chatter on disc brakes is a variation in thickness of the disc. If roughness or vibration is encountered during highway operation or if pedal pumping is experienced at low speeds, the disc may have excessive thickness variation. To inspect for this condition, measure the disc at 12 points with a micrometer at a radius approximately one inch from edge of disc. If thickness meas...

Vehicle: 1996 Mercury Tracer Trio 1.9 L4 GAS
Complaints about power brake operation should be handled as if two separate systems exist. Inspect for faults in the hydraulic system first. If it is satisfactory, start inspecting the power brake circuit. For a quick inspection of proper power unit operation, press the brake pedal firmly and then start the engine. The pedal should fall away slightly and less pressure should be needed to maintain the pedal in any position.
Another inspection begins with installation of a suitable pressure gauge in the brake hydraulic system. Take a reading with the engine Off and the power unit n...

Vehicle: 1996 Mercury Tracer Trio 1.9 L4 GAS
Front & Rear Split Systems
When the brake pedal is depressed, both the primary (front brake) and the secondary (rear brake) master cylinder pistons are moved simultaneously to exert hydraulic fluid pressure on their respective independent hydraulic systems. The fluid displacement of the master cylinder is proportioned to fulfill the requirements of each of the two independent hydraulic brake systems, Fig. .
If a failure of a rear (secondary) brake system should occur, initial brake pedal movement causes the unrestricted secondary piston to bottom in the master cylinder bore. Primary p...
