  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Remove front wheel and tire assembly.
  • Remove two caliper to steering knuckle guide pin bolts.
  • Remove brake caliper from steering knuckle as follows:
    • Rotate bottom end of caliper away from knuckle.
    • Slide top of caliper down from machined abutment on steering knuckle.
  • Support caliper to prevent weight from being applied to brake hose.
Overhaul
  • Remove caliper from brake rotor and brake pads from caliper as described in "Brake Pad Service."
  • Hang caliper on a wire away from rotor.

Parking Brake

These brakes are equipped with self adjusting mechanisms, periodic adjustments are not necessary. If stopping power is insufficient, or if brake pedal travel is excessive, brakes and self adjusting mechanism should be cleaned and inspected.

Component Replacement

Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU)

The hydraulic unit must not be disassembled, its nuts and bolts must not be loosened. Do not drop or subject the hydraulic unit to any impact shocks. Do not turn hydraulic unit upside down or lay unit on its side.

  • Drain brake fluid from fluid reservoir.
  • Remove lefthand fender inner splash shield.

System Operation

Under normal braking conditions, the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) functions as a standard brake system with a diagonally split master cylinder and conventional brake booster.

If a wheel lock is detected during braking, the system will enter ABS mode. During ABS mode, hydraulic pressure in the four wheel circuits is modulated to prevent any wheel from locking.

Each wheel circuit has a set of electrical valves to provide modulation to each wheel. Front wheels receive separate signals and rear wheels receive the same signal.
