The ABS module is capable of performing an on-board diagnosis using the Rotunda Super Star II Tester tool No. 007-0041B or New Generation Star (NGS) tool No. 007-00500, or equivalent. The module monitors system operation and can store all defined diagnostic trouble codes in its memory. The Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) can be retrieved from the ABS module as follows:
If the first DTC received is in the 20's and no other DTC is received, service the indicated component. No other DTCs can be output if a 20's exists. A...

Disc Brakes -> Rear Disc Brakes & Parking Brakes -> Brake Disc Service
Vehicle: 1997 Mercury Cougar XR-7 3.8 V6 GAS
Disc brake service is critical due to the close tolerances required in machining the brake disc to ensure proper brake operation.
Maintaining close control of the shape of the rubbing surfaces is necessary to prevent brake roughness. In addition, the surface finish must be non-directional and maintained at a micro-inch finish. This is necessary to avoid pulls and erratic performance and promote long lining life and equal lining wear of both the lefthand and righthand brakes.
Do not attempt to refinish the rubbing surfaces unless precision equipment,...

Vehicle: 1997 Mercury Cougar XR-7 3.8 V6 GAS
On Vehicles Equipped With Anti-Lock Brakes Refer To "Anti-Lock Brakes".
Vacuum Assist Diaphragm Type
The vacuum assist diaphragm assembly multiplies the force exerted on the master cylinder piston in order to increase the hydraulic pressure delivered to the wheel cylinders while decreasing the effort necessary to obtain acceptable stopping performance.
Vacuum assist units get their energy by opposing engine vacuum to atmospheric pressure. A piston, cylinder and flexible diaphragm utilize this energy to provide brake assistance. The diaphragm is balanced with engine vacuum until the brake...

Hydraulic Brake Systems -> Brake System Bleed -> System Priming -> Wheel Bleeding Sequence
Vehicle: 1997 Mercury Cougar XR-7 3.8 V6 GAS
Pressure bleeding is recommended for all hydraulic brake systems. Ensure all dirt and contaminants are removed from master cylinder area prior to removing reservoir cap.
To prevent air from the pressure tank getting into the lines, do not shake the tank while air is being added to the tank or after it has been pressurized. Set the tank in the required location, bring the air hose to the tank, and do not move it during the bleeding operation. The tank should be kept at least one-third full.
On vehicles equipped with disc brakes and master cylinders without proportioners or press...
