- Release parking brake.
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Remove rear wheels.
- Remove brake drum. Do not pry against brake backing plate.
- Remove lower return spring, Fig. .
- Remove adjuster spring.
- Remove leading brake shoe hold-down, spring and pin.

Brake System Bleed
Before bleeding the rear brakes, the rear displacement cylinder pistons must be returned to the topmost position. Using a SATURN scan tool or suitable equivalent, perform "RUN ABS MOTORS, PISTON UP-HOME." This will run the pistons to the top of their travel.
Use only DOT 3 brake fluid from a clean and sealed container. Do not use DOT 5 brake fluid.

- Ensure brake fluid reservoir is properly filled.
- Attach bleeder hose to modulator assembly rearward bleed valve and submerge other end of hose in clean container partially filled with brake fluid.

- Remove master cylinder from vehicle as described under " Component Replacement."
- Wipe reservoir cap clean, remove cap and inspect reservoir cap and diaphragm for cuts, nicks or deformation. Replace damaged parts as necessary.
- Drain brake fluid from reservoir.
- On models equipped with anti-lock brakes, remove modulator and motor pack from master cylinder.
- On all models, remove brake fluid level sensor.

Brake fluid is corrosive to painted surfaces. Care must be taken not to allow brake fluid to come in contact with painted surfaces on vehicle.
When bleeding the brake system, always bleed right rear wheel circuit first, followed by the left front, left rear and, finally, right front.
